Soaring Again

The
prices of essentials are skyrocketing again after a short break of two weeks at
the kitchen markets in Sylhet. .During a visit to a number of kitchen markets
yesterday, it was found that prices of almost all commodities increased by Tk 5 to Tk 10.
Coarse
rice sold at Tk 50 per kilogram last week. Now it sells at Tk 60 a kg. Edible
oil was Tk 80 a litre two weeks ago. The price now stands at Tk 90
per litre. Similarly, prices of
flour, sugar, pulse, vegetables, fish and other commodities also increased. The
sudden increase without any apparent
reason has put a huge pressure on the fixed income group. A customer at a grocer's said if the prices
continue to increase, they will have to cut a meal off their diet plan. Most of the people coming to
different bazaars expressed dissatisfaction. They also demanded immediate action by the government to
reign in soaring prices.
The deputy commissioner of Sylhet said there is no reason for price hike at this season. He said they are monitoring the markets and would take stern action if any dishonest businessman is found responsible for the price hike.
