Dress does not make a man great.
Sheikh Saadi was a great poet of Iran. He used to
lead a very simple life. The king of Iran invited the great poet Sheikh
Saadi very often to his court. Once on his way to the king’s court the poet took shelter in a nobleman’s
house for a night. He was then in a very simple dress. The
nobleman could not recognize him and treated him as an ordinary man. The poet left the nobleman’s
house in utter dismay. On the next day, Sheikh Saadi went to the
court of the king and was received with honour. He received rich gifts from
the king. He put on a very rich and ornamented dress. Thus, he was returning to
his village. On his way, he again visited that nobleman’s house. This time he was duly
respected by the people of the nobleman’s house. They gave him rich food to
eat. The poet then instead of eating the food, started putting them
into the pockets of his rich cloth. Being astonished, the nobleman asked the poet about
his mysterious behaviour. Then, the poet said, “This food is for my dress, not
for me. Had it been not so, I would have been treated in the same manner when I
was very poorly dressed.” The nobleman was really sad for this. He begged
forgiveness of the poet.
